And at least I still get to do a bunch of cool stuff for them. Good progression.

Absolutely enamored with this one. Feels like a sick companion LP to the Couch Slut record we released in Perfect tone and a perfect album duration. I cannot overstate how important it is that I am left wanting more when a record ends, this hits the mark. My previous enjoyment of Sleep varied, but this record gave me an entirely new love for the band, and retroactively made me enjoy their previous records even more.

A spotless record front to back. Despite the retail nightmare it created upon release. Beautiful and enveloping ambient music, and easily some of my favorite stuff to play at home around the house on my personal time.

I dug on the release, Narkopop, but Rausch just absolutely kills. But here we are, as one of my most-played LPs of the year. I guess everything on this album is just so fucking tight, songwriting rules and the vocals are flawless. Plus a song about the Witcher. Okay I guess I know why I like it, but still, not usually my cup of tea. Visigoth rules. I was a fool. Judas Priest — Firepower Columbia I never liked heavy metal. But I grew up a hardcore kid, I got into a lot of weird shit.

Fucking love this record. Delicate notes are torn apart by a guttural rage, a cry of despair at the horror of modern America… and yet still, buried in there, fighting to rise above the cacophony, the sense that we are better than this, if we can just find a way to wake up from the nightmare and reclaim our humanity.

It should be our new national anthem. Benjamin Hegy Creation- action painting [numero] Midori Takada- through the looking glass [wrwtfww] Arthur Russell- instrumentals [audika] Other People Place- lifestyles of the laptop cafe [warp] Various- outro tempo: electronic and contemporary music from brazil [music from memory] Gaussian Curve- distance [music from memory] Julie Byrne- not even happiness [ba da bing!

Just listen to it. Slowdive — Slowdive Fine addition to their discography. Death Grips — That first song on the new one That first song is kinda ok, if you can put aside the large 12 year old hater fanbase. Demand for the cutouts continues. Three guys, three mixers, three turntables. Members of Cave In and Converge as a power three-piece with riffs, riffs and more riffs. My favorite album of Artificial Brain — Infrared Horizon Outer space death metal with subliminal melodies amidst the blasting and guttural vocals.

All Pigs Must Die — Hostage Animal Ex and current members of the Hope Conspiracy and Converge deliver another batch of what can only be described as pure, pissed off hardcore. Plenty of riffage, no clean singing. Cannibal Corpse — Red Before Black A more straightforward effort from the established splatter-death masters.

Another super-late release. Absolutely pulverizing grindcore. Boom-bap fans need look no further. Hard as hell. Full of Hell — Trumpeting Ecstasy This band has evolved into a unique, experimental grindcore beast. Goatwhore — Vengeful Ascension The perfect blend of thrash, death and black metal, once again.

One of the most crushing live bands going. You want circle pit riffs? Look no further. Invertebrate closes their side with Infest and Suppression covers, so what does that tell ya?

Hearty grind with a side of sludge. Morbid Angel — Kingdoms Disdained Steve Tucker returns to the fold for a solid batch of twisted, Sumerian-happy death metal.

Some real head-nod shit, right here. Perceptionists — Resolution Mr. Lif continues his re-storming of the hip-hop world by getting back with Akrobatik and spitting some serious shit.

Phobia — Lifeless God Pure grindcore from this long-running band. Very intense stuff for speed-freaks only!! Great otherwise. What more could you ask for? Very fun, high-energy show. Plus, at least two members are usually wearing spikes onstage. A fine night of blast beats. Flip Gordon or Marty Scurll vs. Zachary Caputo Some of these items were released digitally last year, but their physical release graced my weary record store hands this year.

Steven Rahman Best of the Best: P. These songs routinely locate that rare convergence of unconventional and intuitive, making it an immediately gratifying listen. The rhythm section led by McCraven on drums treads heavily, drawing the broad templates of each idea the band explores.

The coarse audio quality really accentuates how tight the quartet plays without feeling restrictive, allowing the set to rely on the push-pull tension between its frenetic free-jazz outbursts and its deliberate groove-based segments.

The resulting record is an absolute tour-de-force, making this an essential listen for anyone with an ear for avant-garde jazz. Richard Dawson — Peasant Weird World freak folk Peasant is among the more lyrically ambitious and theatrical records from this year. The music here is dark, tactile, unhinged and marked by unconventional melody, structure, and texture harps, horns, odd percussion that move quickly between abrasive and pastoral.

For those inclined towards its sound — and the sound of other English freak folk — Peasant is an immersive record that continues to reward with repeated plays.

But despite everything, there were some solid releases from this past year that deserve to be highlighted. In no particular order, please enjoy my 17 fav albums from ! This self titled release is dark and melodic, abstract and emotional. Not my fault, just a thing that my mine do. Chance the Rapper — This whole album is a love letter to Chicago and everytime I listen to it I feel so proud to live here. Princess Nokia — Deluxe Favorite song — G. I somehow managed to get it on all 6 of my incredibly different Spotify Daily Mixes, which I think is truly impressive.

Dave Martin Captured Tracks Full length records 1. Protomartyr — Relatives in Descent — Domino 7. Roe Enny — Glare — Root Strata Obnox — Niggative Approach — 12XU Keiji Haino — Watashi Dake? LP — Black Editions 6. Lurkers — 5xCD box — Beggars Banquet Blue Oyster Cult — Rarities Vol.
